My hands are full of bags of things I’ve bought as I walked through the arts and crafts festival. I really cannot carry another thing. Really. But I see a woman sitting behind a table where paintings are being displayed who is wearing a straw hat with its brim pinned back so that I can see her face and her dark eyes, only she doesn’t make eye contact with me and I assume she is shy. Then I see her portrait of the little girl with the large straw hat and the sad face and I have to have it (even though I don’t have enough cash and have to find a money machine and realize when I do return that the shy artist is standing up next to the table waiting for me as if she thinks I am not coming back).

It turns out that she is shy but I find out that she knew my mother-in-law a long time ago. Her name is Marty Spence and her studio is called The Gardener’s House Collection of Fine Arts and it is right around the corner from my own house. She is having an Artist Studio Clearance Sale on Saturday September 24th starting at 10 a.m. You can find her on Facebook.

I hope to have more to say about her soon for many important reasons, but also because I think she has a thing for hats like I do.
