This dress reminds me of my childhood when my aunt made dresses for me and my sister. We would go to the fabric store with her and find simple summer patterns—A-line shifts and sundresses with shoulder ties that we made into bows—and yards of seersucker and madras and cotton jersey with colorful motifs. Then we would go home and play jacks on the front porch under the awning, waiting for our dresses to be made. Maybe we could hear the sewing machine. We didn’t know about Lily Pulitzer yet.
